Photoshop Q&A

Someone recently suggested that I take questions and turn them into short YouTube video responses. I think this is a pretty cool idea, and would like to give it a shot. If you have Photoshop or photography related questions, send them to me. In a week or two, I’ll take a look at the responses and choose a few to answer on my YouTube channel.

What’s in it for you? Well, not only will I answer your question, I’ll notify you when your video is going up and I’ll throw in a little something special for you – discount codes, books, that sort of thing. I haven’t worked this last part out, yet, but I’ll make it worth your time.

How’s that sound? Want some answers AND free stuff? Well, what are you waiting for??

3D Fabric in Photoshop CS5 Extended

I posted a new video tutorial up on YouTube, covering the basics of creating realistic fabric. The actual technique doesn’t take long, but has a lot of capability for variation. I’ve been meaning to put this one up for a long time, but have had several time conflicts, and a tough bout of laziness.

So, there are tons of tutorials out there for 3D Flags in Photoshop, but they all use the Displacement filter. As far as I know, this is the first time the technique has been shown with actual 3D tools in PS. This is a simple but powerful approach to basic modeling in PS, and I hope it will spark some interest in pushing the capabilities further. I don’t think 3D is leaving PS any time soon (though it may split off at some point – who knows?), so it’s worth experimenting early on so that new tools on the horizon are easy to incorporate into your art.

I’d love to hear from others who are using or planning to use 3D in PS. Product Manager Zorana Gee is working on getting a new book from Focal Press out next month, which promises to be the definitive guide to learning these new tools. My copy is on order :)

Atmospheric effects with Photoshop

On last week’s RetouchPro Live session, I talked about adding atmospheric effects to photos in a realistic way. The key point I kept trying to drive home was of paying attention to the details in the image you’re manipulating. While this is probably a good rule-of-thumb for all photomanipulation, in atmospheric effects it has a deeper impact.

Another Repoussé video up on YouTube!

The Photoshop Facebook page has posted another of my Photoshop CS5 Extended videos, this one also on Repoussé in the more mundane text arena. I’ve done something a little different than most with this in that I’ve chosen to do image element replacement and composite the text so it appears to be an actual part of the photograph.

I’m still getting a lot of criticism from folks who don’t see the point of 3D, some even claiming they can do everything in that video faster without 3D (trust me – it can be done, but it’s not faster, nor can you change the look at will). These folks probably won’t ever see the need or utility and that’s perfectly fine. I just don’t understand why they complain about a feature that they don’t have to use, or even pay for. “Hey! You gave me a spare tire with my car, but I have AAA! Are you stupid?” That’s how I see the complainers.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the video. If you have any comments or suggestions for future videos, please drop me a line :)

Third time’s a charm.

I recently completed my third shoot for an outdoor equestrian event, hosted by the AERC. I love doing these rides, as I get to drive around in otherwise restricted areas of amazing land, take pictures of gorgeous horses, and generally get my photo mojo going. This week, I participated in two days of a three-day event, and I thought I’d share some of my thoughts on this specific event, as well as some more general lessons I’m learning.

Have you explored the blend modes available in Photoshop? If so, you can get to most of your favorites by using a shortcut: Shift + Option/Alt + (first letter of blend mode). For example, Shift+opt/Alt+M changes the current mode to Multiply. The shortcut list isn’t complete, but you can round out and update the shortcuts [...]
