#PSW was kind of a blur for me. Most of my time was spent on the Expo floor meeting with some fantastic people, including Adobe engineers and managers, fellow authors, editors, and my sponsors. Of course, I can’t forget the friendliest crew at the show, the Facebook Maniacs. This group was very welcoming, and represents an amazingly diverse set of talents. I’ll talk more about them in a future post, and I’ll be naming names – you’ll want to get to know them! But let me get back to the show, my thoughts, and what I heard from others.

Most of my recent freelance work centers on 3D content within Photoshop. More and more, I’m getting requests to build catalogs of images using a 3D model with many different images. Doing this one at a time is very tedious since the process usually involves a minute or two of placing the artwork, and then up to an hour of rendering. Wash, rinse, repeat. After talking with some fantastic Adobe engineers, I have a solution to present: a script that will take your 3D files and artwork, and batch render them!

On Star Wars Day (May the 4th be with you!), the Adobe Photoshop Facebook crew featured one of my latest 3D videos. This generated a ton of new subscribers and views on my YouTube page.

There are three videos total on this particular project. I had to split things up due to time limits on YouTube uploading. I got lots of positive response, but a few negatives which are to be expected. That being said, the ‘negatives’ were along the lines of “Why not use a camera, instead?”

I found this tip from a Sitepoint newsletter, describing a nifty CSS trick: if you layer up background elements in your style sheet, you can generate what appears to be non-repeating backgrounds for your website. The site describes the process in detail, but in summary you simply create different sized seamless tiles, then let them fill the page, one layer on top of the other. Each tile higher than the background should have some transparency so you can see the lower elements, letting them interact.

Do you enter design or photography competitions? Well, I’ve avoided most of them, preferring to stick with friendly competitions and games. While I have entered (and sometimes won) a few smaller competitions, both in photography and design, I usually get a little nervous putting myself out there “against” others. Call it lack of self confidence, or having too frail an ego, it really comes down to motivation. And that has several sources.

You can turn Wacom pressure options on and off right up in the Options bar. When you have a tool that supports pressure sensitivity selected, click the pen icon over a transparency to control the Opacity and choose the pen icon over a bulls-eye to control the brush size. (via planetphotoshop.com)

Have you explored the blend modes available in Photoshop? If so, you can get to most of your favorites by using a shortcut: Shift + Option/Alt + (first letter of blend mode). For example, Shift+opt/Alt+M changes the current mode to Multiply. The shortcut list isn’t complete, but you can round out and update the shortcuts [...]
