About

I’ve been goofing around in the Photoshop world for about a decade. In that time, I’ve won a few photography awards, done quite a bit of teaching online and in person, written a book (with another few on the way), and have encountered some amazing people.

Some time in the late 90s, I graduated from the University of California at San Diego with a Bachelor’s degree in Physics. My emphasis at the time was materials, but I didn’t put that education to use for about 3 years. I wasn’t such a hot student, but I did really well as a lab assistant. During that time, I started to take an interest in photography and microscopy.

Around about 2004 I was getting serious about photography and digital imaging, having found a way to fold these skills into my career. I entered my first photo print competition and took category first place and best-of-show. At work, I became a subject-matter-expert (SME) in optical microscopy and digital image archiving, and started in on electron microscopy. A little later I became an SME in high-pressure systems (10,000 psi and above). You could say I get bored easily :)

Since I started with digital imaging, I taught myself to use Photoshop and push my photography based on examining other people’s work and trying to reverse engineer it. When that didn’t work, I took a photo class or read some tutorials. I’ve been sharing what I’ve learned for quit some time, and published a book in 2008 with Dan Moughamian through Peachpit/Adobe Press.

You can find the majority of my tutorials on CommunityMX, though prior to writing for CMX I hung out on PhotoshopTechniques.com. PST was at one time one of the largest dedicated Photoshop forums online, and played host to some of the most phenomenal digital artists I’ve ever encountered. As of this writing, PST has been offline for a while, but there are big things brewing so keep an eye on my blog to be the first in line when it reopens later in 2010.

Throughout my blog you’ll find my opinions, some random thoughts, a few freebies and some digital content you can purchase, like tutorials, brushes, scripts, etc. Be sure to check now and then for offers from trusted partners and supporters. As a user group manager, I sometimes get a good line on very cool offers (you’ll find them at lammug.com in the Sponsors section, or tagged in a post if there’s a time limit).

I hope you’ll get some use and enjoyment from this site! I’m always open to suggestions (site design, products to offer, tutorials, or personal hygiene tips), so drop me an email and say hi :)

    Hi Scott,

It was a pleasure to meet you there at El Parasol. I hope you got better. I’m hoping t get more into photography and various aspects of it. For now, I’m like a baby learning to walk again. I had stopped doing any photography for a while do to the lack of proper equipment. Now, I’ve got a decent camera (Nikon D5000), looking forward to getting and learning PS and doing some abstracts and other stuff.

Thanks for the work and info you’ve put into your web sites. I’ll be exploring them to get some more ideas and education. As it is the holiday season, I’ll be going to CA to be with family and friends. In January, I’ll be focusing on these skills and fun.

Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

    Thanks!
    Fritz

You can turn Wacom pressure options on and off right up in the Options bar. When you have a tool that supports pressure sensitivity selected, click the pen icon over a transparency to control the Opacity and choose the pen icon over a bulls-eye to control the brush size. (via planetphotoshop.com)

Have you explored the blend modes available in Photoshop? If so, you can get to most of your favorites by using a shortcut: Shift + Option/Alt + (first letter of blend mode). For example, Shift+opt/Alt+M changes the current mode to Multiply. The shortcut list isn’t complete, but you can round out and update the shortcuts [...]
